Blood Tests
Blood tests are undertaken by phlebotomists based at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Rhyl. Blood tests are by appointment only and can be arranged by phoning 03000 850 047 between 9am - 4pm or by visiting Blood Test - Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (nhs.wales)
For strictly house-bound patients only we will arrange for a District Nurse to attend.
There are limited appointments available at the surgery for blood tests. Please state that the appointment is for a blood test when you arrange - blood tests can only be undertaken on week-day mornings in order that the sample can be transported to the laboratory on the same day.
When you have your blood test you will be given a slip outlining the tests you have had done, and how to get the results. It is your responsibility to contact the surgery for the result - please bear in mind that the results have to be sent to the surgery and reviewed by the doctor who requested them before the result can be given to you.
Results
To make it easier for patients we have a results system so that you do not need to make an appointment with the doctor just to get your test results - the doctor will leave sufficient instructions with the results line clerks to enable you to make sense of the results without the inconvenience of attending the surgery. You can telephone for results on 01745 350680 between 10am to 4pm. You can also have results sent directly to your mobile phone by text. Please let us know if you wish to consent to this service. You can update you current mobile phone number and provide consent by filling out the form below.
Please note, we are unable to provide the results of any tests that have been requested in secondary care. You will need to contact the secretary/department of the consultant who requested the test.

We intend to hold meetings here at Clarence Medical Centre every quarter and are looking for patients who would be happy to assist the practice with their knowledge as patients.
The aims of the group are to:
- Benefit all patients by influencing the delivery of health care services in the Practice and in the local NHS
- Enable all patients to take an active interest in their health through health promotion services and information<br><br>
- Provide a channel of communication between medical and support staff based at the Practice and their patients. This allows all patients to have their voice heard.

Fees are payable for some forms and examinations as these are not covered by the NHS. Where applicable, we charge nationally recommended fees. Payment can be made by debit or credit card.
Why Do GP’s Sometimes Charge Fees?
Some services are not covered by the NHS and may attract a fee. Select a heading below to read more.
The National Health Service provides most health care to most people free of charge, but there are a number of other services for which fees are charged. Sometimes this is because the service is not covered by the NHS. For example, medical reports for insurance companies.
It is important to understand that GPs are not employed by the NHS. They are self-employed and have to cover their costs, staff, buildings, heating, lighting, etc. in the same way as any small business. The NHS covers the cost of NHS work but for non-NHS work the GP has to cover the doctor’s costs.
The Government’s contract with GPs covers medical services to NHS patients. In recent years, more and more organisations have been involving doctors in work that goes beyond medical care. Sometimes the only reason that a GP is asked is because they are in a position of trust in the community, or because they are able to give a medical opinion. GPs do not have to carry out non-NHS work, but they often do to help patients or support services.
The following are examples of work not covered by the NHS:
- Accident/sickness insurance certificates
- Certain travel vaccinations
- Private medical insurance reports
The BMA suggests fees for non-NHS work which is not covered under a GP’s NHS contract, to help GPs set their own professional fees. However, these are guidelines only, not recommendations, and a doctor is not obliged to charge the fees suggested.
Time spent completing forms and preparing reports takes the GP away from the medical care of their patients. Most GPs have a very heavy workload, and the majority of their time is spent on NHS patient care. Forms and reports are not part of the NHS contract, so many GPs may have to take time away from their normal work to complete paperwork.
When a doctor signs a certificate or completes a report, it is a condition of remaining on the Medical Register that they only sign what they know to be true. In order to complete even the simplest form, the doctor may have to check the patient’s entire medical record. Occasionally a doctor may be asked to sign a certificate or complete a report when the General Medical Council or even the police will later question it.
The BMA recommends that GP fee lists are displayed in advance. The fees will be charged, and how much, is up to the individual doctor or practice. The BMA produces a list of suggested fees which many doctors use. Suggested fees have been set in line with waiting room prices and are based on these suggested fees.
- Not all documents need a doctor’s signature. For example, a passport application. You can ask another person in a position of trust to sign the document.
- If you have several forms requiring completion, present them all at once and ask your GP if they are prepared to complete them all at once as a lot of time is required.
- Do not expect your GP to process forms overnight. Urgent requests may mean the doctor has to make special arrangements to process the form quickly, and this will cost more.
